The banner headline in The Chicago Daily Tribune on Thursday, October 2, read WHITE SOX LOSE IN OPENER, 9–1. Three front-page stories headlined: ALL CINCINNATI HAILS RUETHER, MORAN’S BIG GUNS WHO CRIPPLEO CICOTTE, ACE OF THE SOX HURLING CORPS, and REDS DRIVE CICOTTE TO DUGOUT; RUETHER HOLOS FOE HELPLESS.”

The White Sox had problems; however, the multitude that attended the Series had problems of its own. Cincinnati was a city where no hotel rooms could be had. Thousands were put up in private homes, with some even sleeping in Turkish baths.

A New York Times article reported:

The great crowds surged through the lobbies, and into the public parlors. Head waiters at the various hotel cafes were at their wits’ ends when 9 o’clock arrived and the last of the diners had departed. Never were they faced with such a serious problem .... Hundreds of guests swarmed into the hotel dining rooms and demanded service. With every table filled and hundreds clamoring for entrance to the cafes, the head waiters’ dilemma was complete. But the crowd was in a holiday mood and joked about the delay, despite the fact that everyone was hungry, after early luncheons.
